Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies

Welcome to 8th grade social studies at Silverland Middle School!  This is a companion site to Mr. Whitehead's social studies class.  Content throughout this site is VERY useful to both students and parents.  Often, the site will be used within the regular social studies class to view presentations, web sites, and download important assignment rubrics.  Furthermore, this is an excellent resource for students who miss days and an even better resource to answer that enduring question, "So what did you learn today?"  Feel free to navigate the site and please become familiar with its use.

 Teaching Philosophy

As a professional educator I believe:

  • Every student has the privilage of EARNING a world-class education and it is the task of the teacher, parents, and student to provide the tools necessary for EARNING that education.
  • Every teacher, parent, and student has the RIGHT to be safe and secure anywhere on the property of the school 100% of the time.
  • In the "One-Third Rule": Education is "one-third" the teacher's responsiblity, "one-third" the parents' responsibility, and "one-third" the student's responsibility.
  • Every person has the RIGHT to be respected within the school 100% of the time.
Biography
I was born in Roseburg, Oregon in 1980, where I lived my first 18 years of life in a small historic town called Oakland, Oregon (population: 801).  I attended the Oakland School District from pre-school through 12th grade, where I graduated in 1999.  I then attended Southwest Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Oregon where I began my college studies in history and journalism.  In 2001 I transferred to Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon where I earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree in History in 2004.  In the summer of 2005 I earned my Master's Degree in Teaching (also at SOU).  I also married my beautiful wife, LeAnn, in the summer of 2005 and made the "big move" to Reno, NV to begin my teaching career at Fernley Intermediate School.  In 2009, my cherished daughter, Olivia, was born to a very happy mommy and daddy.  In the summer of 2009, we moved to Fernley where I could be closer to work and escape the stress (and expense) of commuting more than 75 miles round-trip five days a week.  I am entering my 6th year as a professional educator where I assume several other duties: School Improvement Committee, Leadership Teacher/Coach, and Wrestling Coach.  My wife and I have come to love Nevada in our six years and have grown particularly fond of living in Fernley for the last year.
